Bosch Dishwasher Drain Pump Replacement — What This Part Does
The drain pump sits at the bottom of the tub under the filter assembly and evacuates dirty water out of the dishwasher through the drain hose. Bosch dishwashers throw an E25 code when the pump is blocked, the pump cover is loose or missing, or the pump cannot evacuate water. The E23 code means the pump cannot remove water, usually because debris has jammed the impeller, the pump motor has failed, or wiring connections have come loose.
Pumps fail when broken glass, food debris, or small objects (twist ties, toothpicks) lodge in the impeller and seize the motor. Over time hard-water buildup or a worn motor can also stop the pump from spinning. If the pump cover is not seated correctly, the machine will not drain and will display the same codes.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- E25 error code on the display Bosch says this means the drain pump is blocked, or the drain-pump cover is loose or missing.
- E23 error code on the display The pump cannot remove water, pointing to blockage, wiring issues, or pump motor failure.
- Standing water in the bottom of the tub after a cycle The pump is not evacuating water because the impeller is jammed or the motor is dead.
- Grinding, buzzing, or humming noise from the pump area Debris or a broken impeller is stopping the pump from turning freely.
- Pump runs but no water drains out The drain hose is kinked, the disposer knock-out plug was not removed, or the pump impeller is broken.
- Pump does not run at all during the drain cycle The motor winding has failed or the wiring harness to the pump is loose or corroded.
How to Replace It
- Shut off power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker and turn off the water supply valve under the sink.
- Pull the dishwasher out from under the counter if you need access to the side or rear panels, then disconnect the drain hose from the sink or disposer connection to prevent spills.
- Remove the lower dish rack and unscrew or lift out the cylindrical filter assembly at the bottom of the tub to expose the drain pump chamber.
- Check that the pump cover (a round plastic cap over the pump impeller) is not loose or missing, then remove it and scoop out any standing water and debris with a sponge.
- Spin the pump impeller by hand to confirm it turns freely without grinding or seizing, and pull out any broken glass, twist ties, or food particles jamming the blades.
- If the impeller is clear but the pump still does not run, tip the machine back or remove the lower access panel (usually along the bottom edge of the front door) to reach the pump assembly underneath the tub.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the pump, release any clamps or screws holding the pump to the sump housing, and twist or pull the pump out of the housing.
- Install the new drain pump by pressing it into the sump housing, securing any retaining clips or screws, and reconnecting the wiring harness until it clicks.
- Reinstall the pump cover, filter assembly, and lower rack, then restore power and water and run a rinse cycle to verify the pump evacuates water and the error code clears.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Bosch dishwasher drain pump assembly | Amazon | Find your model and serial number on the metal tag inside the door edge or on the left side of the tub. Cross-reference that model number with Bosch parts diagrams or an appliance parts supplier to get the exact pump part number for your unit. |
| Drain pump cover (if loose or missing) | Amazon | Bosch identifies a loose or missing cover as a primary cause of E25. Check the parts diagram for your model to order the correct cover. |

When to Call a Pro
If you have cleared all debris, confirmed the impeller spins freely, and replaced the pump but the E25 or E23 code returns, the main control board may be sending incorrect signals or a wiring harness fault exists elsewhere in the machine. Diagnosing board-level faults or tracing low-voltage control wiring typically requires a schematic and a multimeter. Call a tech if you are not comfortable working inside the machine or if the dishwasher is still under warranty.
