Yaskawa GA800 F031 Fault - Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

F031 is not a documented GA800 code. Check if display shows F030 (bUS communication error). Most often a loose option card or cable issue.

Yaskawa GA800 F031 Fault — What It Means

F031 does not appear in any Yaskawa GA800 technical manual or official fault code list. The GA800 uses Fxxx format codes (F001, F002, F012, F030, etc.), but F031 is not recognized. The most likely explanation is a misread display or typo. If the code is actually F030, that indicates a bUS Option Communication Error, meaning the drive cannot communicate with an installed option card (such as Ethernet bX, Profibus bP, or other fieldbus module). If the display truly shows F031, consult the drive nameplate and verify the exact model number, as the code may be specific to a variant not covered in standard documentation or the display may be showing two separate diagnostic codes.

Before You Replace Anything

Technicians sometimes replace the main control board assuming a system fault when the actual problem is a poorly seated or oxidized option card connector. Reseat the card and inspect cable terminations before ordering any circuit board.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Does the keypad display show exactly F031, or could it be F030 or two separate indicators?
Yes: If it is actually F030, proceed with communication troubleshooting. If truly F031, consult the drive nameplate and contact Yaskawa support for model-specific codes.
No: Recheck the display carefully and photograph it. F031 is not a standard GA800 code, so verify model and firmware version.
Is a communication option card (bX, bP, bE, or similar) installed in the drive?
Yes: Remove and reseat the card firmly. Inspect connector pins for oxidation or damage. Check cable connections at both ends.
No: If no option card is installed, the fault cannot be F030. Verify the exact code and consult the manual for the correct meaning.
After reseating the card and cycling power, does the fault clear?
Yes: The card or cable connection was loose. Monitor the drive for recurring errors and verify network settings.
No: Test with a known-good option card if available, or check cable continuity and network switch. If fault persists, the control board may need replacement.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Confirm the exact fault code by reading the keypad display carefully. Take a photograph if possible. F031 is not listed in GA800 manuals, so verify it is not F030 or two separate codes.
  2. Power off the drive at the main disconnect and wait at least 10 minutes for internal capacitors to discharge before opening any covers.
  3. Remove the communication option card from its slot on the control board. Inspect the card edge connector and backplane socket for dust, oxidation, or bent pins.
  4. Reseat the option card firmly into the slot, making sure it clicks or seats completely. Secure any retaining screws or clips.
  5. Inspect communication cables for shield grounding, proper termination (100 Ω for Ethernet, 120 Ω for RS-485), and physical damage. Replace any damaged cables with shielded, twisted-pair versions.
  6. Check the network switch or host controller to confirm it is powered on, the port is active, and VLAN or protocol settings match the drive configuration. Try a direct connection to a PC to isolate switch issues.
  7. Power on the drive and monitor the keypad. If the fault clears, run a short test cycle. If F030 (or F031) reappears, replace the communication option card with a Yaskawa-approved module matching the drive firmware version.
  8. Replace the control board only if a new option card and verified cabling do not resolve the fault, as the backplane communication circuit may be damaged.

Yaskawa bX Ethernet option card (or bP, bE, depending on protocol)Amazon | Verify the exact card type and firmware version that matches your GA800 drive revision.
Shielded twisted-pair Ethernet or fieldbus cableAmazon | Use industrial-grade cable with proper shield grounding at both ends and correct termination resistors.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified industrial electrician or automation technician if you are not trained in VFD service. Working inside a variable frequency drive involves high DC bus voltages (up to 750 V DC on 480 V models) that remain stored in capacitors even after input power is removed. Diagnosing communication faults requires knowledge of fieldbus protocols, network configuration, and firmware compatibility. If reseating the option card and checking cables does not resolve the issue, a technician with Yaskawa training can verify firmware versions, test the control board backplane, and safely replace internal components. Do not attempt to open the drive or handle circuit boards unless you are qualified and have followed all lockout-tagout and capacitor discharge procedures.

Rough cost: A pro service call runs about $200-500 for diagnostic, option card replacement, and network troubleshooting.
