⚡ Quick Answer

F014 means Option Card Connection Error (CN5-A). Most common fix: re-seat the option card in the CN5-A slot after de-energizing the drive.

Yaskawa GA800 F014 Fault — What It Means

The F014 fault code on a Yaskawa GA800 VFD indicates an Option Card Connection Error (CN5-A). The drive has detected a fault or loss of communication with an option card installed in the CN5-A slot. This fault is specific to the GA800 series and means the drive cannot maintain contact with the option card, which may be a communication module, Ethernet interface, or other expansion card.

This is not related to output phase loss or motor wiring problems. The fault points directly to the physical or electrical interface between the drive’s CN5-A connector and the installed option card. The drive will not operate until communication is restored.

Before You Replace Anything

Technicians sometimes replace the option card immediately when the real problem is a loose connection or debris in the CN5-A slot. Always de-energize, remove, inspect, and firmly re-seat the card before ordering a replacement.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Does the fault clear after a power cycle (de-energize, wait, then restore power)?
Yes: The fault was likely transient (a brief communication glitch). Monitor the drive for recurrence and inspect connections if it returns.
No: The fault is persistent. Proceed to inspect the physical connection and option card.
After re-seating the option card, does the fault still appear?
Yes: The option card or the drive's CN5 interface is likely faulty. Swap the card with a known-good unit to isolate the problem.
No: The fault was caused by a loose connection. Verify the drive operates normally and secure the card.
Does a replacement option card in the same slot also trigger F014?
Yes: The drive's control board (CN5 interface) is damaged. The control board must be replaced or the drive sent for repair.
No: The original option card was faulty. Replace it and the drive should operate normally.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. De-energize the drive completely by switching off input power and verifying the display is blank. Wait at least 30 seconds for internal capacitors to discharge.
  2. Restore power and observe whether the F014 fault clears on its own. If it does, the issue may be transient and you should monitor for recurrence.
  3. De-energize again and open the drive enclosure to access the CN5-A slot where the option card is installed.
  4. Remove the option card by releasing any retaining clips or screws. Inspect both the card edge connector and the CN5-A slot for bent pins, corrosion, or debris.
  5. Re-insert the option card firmly into the CN5-A slot, ensuring it is fully seated and secured. If the card uses external cables, verify those connections are tight and the cable is not damaged.
  6. Restore power and test the drive. If the fault persists, replace the option card with a known-good unit of the same type.
  7. If a new card also fails, the drive’s control board CN5 interface is damaged. Contact Yaskawa at repair@yaskawa.com or 1-800-927-5292 (Option 2, then Option 1) for control board replacement or drive repair.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Yaskawa GA800 Option Card (CN5-A compatible)Amazon | Must match the original card type (Ethernet, fieldbus, or communication module). Contact Yaskawa for the correct part number for your application.
GA800 Control BoardAmazon | Required only if the CN5 interface on the drive is damaged. Yaskawa does not support field-level board repair beyond replacement.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified technician or contact Yaskawa support if re-seating the option card does not clear the fault. The GA800 Maintenance & Troubleshooting Manual states that repairs beyond fan and control board replacement are not supported by standard documentation. High-voltage wiring, internal diagnostics, and board-level work require training and test equipment. If a known-good option card also triggers F014, the drive’s control board is likely damaged and must be replaced by a technician or sent to Yaskawa for repair. Network-based option cards (Ethernet, fieldbus) may also require configuration expertise to rule out switch or protocol issues before replacing hardware.

Rough cost: A pro service call runs about $200-500 for option card replacement and labor.
