⚡ Quick Answer

CPF16 signals a control circuit self-diagnostic error. Most often caused by a failed control board. Replace the logic board or drive.

Most likely defective control board (logic board) (the most common cause)

Yaskawa A1000 CPF16 — What It Means

CPF16 is a Control Circuit Error fault on the Yaskawa A1000 VFD. The drive’s internal microprocessor has detected a self-diagnostic failure within the control circuit (the logic board). This indicates the control board cannot complete its standard internal checks, pointing to hardware failure, data corruption, or a critical communication breakdown between the control board and other drive components. The drive will shut down output immediately and will not restart until the fault is cleared. This is a critical hardware fault, not a parameter or wiring issue.

Before You Replace Anything

Technicians sometimes suspect the operator keypad or cable first. Always perform a full power reset and check the operator connector before ordering a control board, since a loose or corroded keypad connector can trigger the same fault.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Does the fault clear after a full 5-minute power-off reset?
Yes: The fault was transient, likely caused by electrical noise or a temporary glitch. Monitor the drive for recurrence and check input power quality.
No: The fault is persistent hardware damage. Proceed to inspect the operator and control board connections.
Is the digital operator keypad connector firmly seated and free of corrosion or bent pins?
Yes: The operator connection is good. The fault is internal to the control board or power supply circuit.
No: Clean or replace the operator cable and reseat the connector. If the fault persists, the control board is damaged.
Do you have access to a known-good operator keypad from another drive to swap for testing?
Yes: Swap the keypad. If CPF16 clears, replace the original operator. If CPF16 remains, the control board must be replaced.
No: The control board is the remaining suspect. Replace the control board or the entire drive per manufacturer guidance.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off main input power to the drive and wait at least 5 minutes to allow the DC bus capacitors to discharge and the control circuit to fully reset.
  2. Restore power and check if CPF16 returns immediately. If the fault clears, the issue was transient noise and no further action is needed unless it recurs.
  3. Inspect the digital operator keypad and its cable. Unplug the operator connector from the control board, examine the pins for damage or corrosion, and firmly reconnect it.
  4. Swap the operator keypad with a known-good unit from another drive if available. Power on and check if the fault clears to rule out a faulty keypad or cable.
  5. Open the drive enclosure (after lockout/tagout) and visually inspect the control board for burnt components, loose connectors, or physical damage.
  6. Replace the control board if all connection checks pass and the fault persists. Consult your model’s service manual for the correct part number and installation procedure.
  7. Replace the entire drive if the control board is not available separately or if the drive is a high-voltage sealed unit where board replacement is not recommended by the manufacturer.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Yaskawa A1000 control board (logic board)Amazon | Match the exact model and voltage rating of your drive; consult the nameplate or service manual for the correct part number.
Digital operator keypad cableAmazon | Use only genuine Yaskawa replacement cables to avoid communication errors.
Yaskawa A1000 VFD assemblyAmazon | If control board replacement is not feasible or the drive is sealed, replace the entire unit matching horsepower and voltage.

When to Call a Pro

Call a licensed electrician or drive specialist for CPF16. This fault requires working inside the VFD enclosure with exposed high-voltage DC and AC bus bars, diagnostic tools to test logic circuits, and knowledge of drive architecture. Control board replacement demands proper ESD handling, firmware compatibility checks, and parameter backup and restore. If the drive powers critical machinery, a professional can minimize downtime and make sure the replacement is done safely and correctly. Do not attempt this repair unless you are trained and authorized to work on industrial motor drives.

Rough cost: A pro service call runs about $400-1200 for control board replacement or $1500-4000 for drive replacement depending on model and rating.
