⚡ Quick Answer

CPF03 on a Yaskawa A1000 means a control board connection error. The most common fix is reseating the control board connector.

Yaskawa A1000 CPF03 — What It Means

The CPF03 fault on a Yaskawa A1000 variable frequency drive signals a control board connection error. The drive has detected a problem in communication or connection between the control board and the drive electronics. This is an internal electronics or connection fault, not a motor overload, output short, or field wiring issue. The fault means the drive has lost or detected invalid data between the control board assembly and the rest of the drive hardware.

Unlike motor-side faults, CPF03 points to the control circuitry itself. It can result from a loose physical connector, electrical noise affecting the control board link, or a failed control board. The drive will not run until the connection is restored and verified. The error is sometimes described as a PWM data error in some repair videos, but the manufacturer-aligned terminology is control board connection error.

Before You Replace Anything

Technicians sometimes replace the entire drive when a simple reseat of the control board connector would have cleared the fault. Always inspect and reconnect the control board harness first before ordering expensive replacement hardware.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Does the fault clear after a power cycle and return immediately or intermittently?
Yes: An intermittent CPF03 points to a loose or noise-affected connection. Reseat the control board connector and check for EMC issues before replacing parts.
No: A persistent fault right after power-up usually means either the control board connector is fully unseated or the board itself has failed. Proceed to physical inspection.
Can you see any visible damage, contamination, or bent pins on the control board connector?
Yes: Physical damage to the connector or pins requires cleaning, straightening pins if safe, or replacing the damaged control board or harness.
No: If the connector looks intact, reseat it firmly and verify proper locking. If the fault persists, the control board is likely faulty.
Is the drive installation in a high-EMI environment (welders, large motors, unshielded cables nearby)?
Yes: Noise can corrupt the control board link. Install shielded cables, separate control wiring from power wiring, and verify proper grounding and filtering.
No: EMI is less likely. Focus on the physical connection and control board health.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Lock out and tag out the drive supply power, then wait for the DC bus capacitors to discharge fully (consult your model’s safe-work procedure) before opening the drive enclosure.
  2. Open the drive cover and locate the control board assembly, typically mounted near the top or side of the drive chassis.
  3. Inspect the control board connector and any mating harness or header for loose fit, bent pins, contamination, heat discoloration, or physical damage.
  4. Disconnect and firmly reseat the control board connector, ensuring it locks or seats completely with no gaps or play.
  5. Check wiring practices around the drive: verify that control and communication wiring is shielded, properly grounded, and routed away from power cables and high-EMI sources.
  6. Close the drive and restore power, then clear the fault from the keypad or parameter menu and observe whether CPF03 returns.
  7. Replace the control board if the fault persists after connector checks and EMC review, or replace the entire drive if the control board replacement does not resolve the issue.
  8. Document the repair and verify normal drive operation under load before returning the equipment to service.

Control board connector harnessAmazon | Replace if the harness or connector shell is visibly damaged, melted, or has broken locking tabs.

When to Call a Pro

CPF03 repair requires opening a high-voltage industrial drive, working near DC bus capacitors that can remain charged after power-off, and diagnosing internal control circuitry. Unless you are a qualified electrician or controls technician with VFD training, call a professional. The work involves lockout/tagout, safe capacitor discharge, ESD-sensitive handling of the control board, and verification of drive parameters after repair. A qualified service technician will have the tools, PPE, and manufacturer documentation to safely diagnose the control board connection, check for EMI issues, and replace the board or drive if necessary. If your facility does not have trained drive technicians, contact a Yaskawa distributor or authorized service center.

Rough cost: A pro service call runs about $200-600.
