Yaskawa A1000 oFA34 Fault — What It Means

The oFA34 fault (often misread as AL-34 on the display) indicates the Yaskawa A1000 VFD cannot detect a valid communication option card connected to the CN5-A port. This port typically hosts encoder feedback cards, analog input cards, or network interface modules. The fault triggers when the drive’s control board loses communication with the option card, either because the card is unplugged, damaged, improperly seated, or the wiring is compromised.

This is not an encoder feedback fault per se, though encoder interface cards plugged into CN5-A are a common source. The fault can also appear if the control board itself is damaged or if parameters have disabled the CN5-A port. Always verify the exact code displayed, the oFA34 code uses a lowercase ‘o’ and uppercase ‘F’ and ‘A’, which can look like different characters depending on the seven-segment display.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off all power to the drive and disconnect all voltage sources. Wait 5 minutes for the DC bus to discharge, then measure DC bus voltage to confirm it is below 50 Vdc before proceeding.
  2. Inspect CN5-A connections at both the terminal block and the option card plug. Look for loose screws, corroded pins, melted or folded-back wires, and physical damage to the connector housing.
  3. Remove and reseat the option card fully. Check that it clicks or locks into place and that all pins align properly. Look for bent pins or foreign material in the slot.
  4. Power the drive back on and observe whether the oFA34 fault reappears immediately or after a delay. A transient fault may clear on restart.
  5. Test with a known-good option card if available. Swap the card and restart. If the fault clears, the original card is defective. If it persists, proceed to the next step.
  6. Check drive parameters for CN5-A port configuration. Consult your model’s parameter manual to verify the port is enabled and set for the correct option card type. If encoder feedback is not required, switch to open-loop control as a temporary workaround.
  7. Replace the control board if all connections and cards are verified good but the fault persists. If the fault continues after a new control board, replace the entire drive.
