Whirlpool Range LOC Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

LOC on a Whirlpool range means the control lock feature is active, not a fault. Hold START/ENTER for 5 seconds to unlock the keypad.

Whirlpool Range LOC Error Code — What It Means

LOC on a Whirlpool range display is not an error code. It indicates that the control lock (child lock) feature is enabled, which intentionally disables the keypad and locks the oven door to prevent accidental use. When you press any control pad while the lock is active, the display shows “LOC” to remind you the controls are locked. The range will not respond to commands until you turn off the control lock.

This feature is preset to unlocked on most Whirlpool ranges but can be activated intentionally or by holding a button too long during cleaning or normal operation. Once unlocked, the “LOC” message disappears and normal keypad function resumes. If the message persists after an unlock attempt, a temporary control glitch or stuck key may be present, but that is a separate troubleshooting path rather than the normal meaning of LOC.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Verify the lock is active by pressing any keypad button and confirming that “LOC” appears on the display and no commands are accepted.
  2. Turn off the oven and timer if either is running, since some models require all functions to be idle before unlocking.
  3. Hold START/ENTER for 5 seconds (or the lock-designated button on your model) until you hear a tone and “LOC” clears from the display.
  4. Check your owner’s manual if START/ENTER does not work, as some Whirlpool models use a different button or dual-function key for control lock.
  5. Perform a power reset by turning off the range circuit breaker for 1 minute, then restoring power, if the display still shows LOC after the unlock attempt.
  6. Inspect the keypad for stuck buttons by gently pressing each key to make sure none are physically jammed or unresponsive.
  7. Test the keypad after unlocking by selecting a function (such as Bake) to confirm the control responds normally and LOC does not return.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
User interface control board (touchpad)Amazon | Required only if the keypad remains unresponsive after unlocking and power reset, indicating a failed touchpad.
Main control board (oven control)Amazon | Needed if the display is garbled or LOC persists despite a new touchpad and all unlock attempts.
Wire harness connector (touchpad to control)Amazon | Inspect or replace if pins are corroded or the connection between the touchpad and main board is intermittent.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if the control lock will not disengage after holding the unlock button for 5 seconds and performing a full power reset. Also call if the display shows LOC intermittently without you pressing any buttons, if other error codes appear alongside LOC, or if the keypad remains completely unresponsive after you clear the lock message. A technician can test the touchpad and main control board with the correct voltage and resistance specs for your model and replace the failed component. If you are uncomfortable working with 240-volt appliance circuits or removing the control panel, professional service is the safer choice.
