Vulcan Commercial Range and Oven Error Codes: Gas and Electric Troubleshooting Guide

Vulcan ranges and ovens from ITW Food Equipment Group use mechanical and electro-mechanical controls. Most Vulcan equipment has no digital error display. The “error codes” on these units are symptoms: a pilot that will not stay lit, an oven that runs too hot, a burner that will not fire.

Gas Model Faults
Pilot Outage — The Most Common “Error”
A standing pilot that goes out is the most frequent complaint on Vulcan gas units. The pilot stays lit when everything works correctly. When it goes out, the gas valve closes and the unit cannot fire.

- Dirty pilot orifice
- Weak thermocouple (below 25mV)

Infinite Switch Testing
The infinite switch controls power to the heating element. These switches use a bimetal strip and a heating element inside the switch body.

Hot test: With power applied, the output terminal should show voltage only when the thermostat calls for heat. A switch that passes voltage continuously has welded contacts. Replace it.

Thermostat Bulb Positioning

Fix: Ensure the capillary bulb is fully inserted into the bulb well. The bulb must contact the well walls for accurate heat transfer. Secure the bulb with the retaining clip so it cannot slide out during cooking.
Common installation error: The sensing bulb is the last few inches of the capillary tube. The rest of the tube must not touch the oven wall or hot surfaces.
Robertshaw Thermostatic Controls
Robertshaw controls appear on many Vulcan gas oven models. These are gas-specific thermostats with a temperature dial, a capillary bulb, and a gas valve section.
Symptoms and checks:
- Oven runs too hot: The thermostat contacts are stuck closed or the calibration is off. Try calibration first.
- Oven runs too cold: The capillary bulb lost its gas charge. Replace the entire Robertshaw control.
- Oven will not light: Check the pilot first, then the thermocouple circuit.
