Siemens SINAMICS V20 F1 Fault — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Siemens SINAMICS V20 F1 overcurrent fault means, why it trips, and how to diagnose and fix it step by step.

Siemens SINAMICS V20 F1 Fault — What It Means

The Siemens SINAMICS V20 F1 fault is an Overcurrent fault. The drive’s current monitoring has detected that output current exceeded the instantaneous overcurrent threshold — typically 200% of the drive’s rated current. F1 is a hard-trip protection event; the drive shuts output down immediately to protect its IGBTs. Unlike the thermal overload alarm (A501), F1 is fast-acting and points to a current surge, short circuit, or extreme load event rather than gradual overheating.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Isolate the motor — check for a short circuit — Power off and disconnect the motor leads from the V20 output terminals (U, V, W). Measure phase-to-phase (U-V, V-W, U-W) and each phase-to-ground on both the motor cable and the motor terminals. Any ground reading below 1 MΩ = insulation fault.
  2. Extend the acceleration ramp — Navigate to parameter P1120 (Ramp-Up Time). Increase the value by 100% and test. A too-short ramp on a high-inertia load is a very common V20 F1 cause on first installation.
  3. Check the mechanical load — With power off, manually rotate the load. Any binding or rough spots indicate a mechanical problem — bad bearing, jam, or seized equipment.
  4. Test the motor with a megohm tester — Apply 500V megohm test to the motor windings. Reading below 1 MΩ = degraded insulation that will continue to cause F1 on startup.
  5. Reset and test at slow ramp — Press the Fn key to reset the fault, then run the drive at 10% speed (parameter r0022 monitors output frequency). If F1 trips at low speed with correct ramp, the fault is in the motor or cable.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Motor (replacement)Amazon | Replace when megohm test shows degraded insulation
VFD-rated motor cableAmazon | Replace if cable insulation shows damage; use properly shielded VFD cable
Larger frame V20 driveAmazon | If drive is undersized for the startup current demand of the load

When to Call a Pro

If F1 persists after clearing mechanical binding, correcting the ramp parameter, and confirming motor insulation is good, the V20’s current sensor or IGBT gate driver may have been damaged by a prior event. Siemens-certified drive service technicians handle internal drive diagnostics.
