Siemens Micromaster F0012 — What It Means

F0012 on a Siemens Micromaster (440/430/420 series) indicates the drive has lost the signal from the inverter heatsink temperature sensor. This is a wire-break fault, not an overheating condition. The drive expects a continuous, valid signal from the sensor that monitors the power inverter heatsink temperature. When that circuit opens or fails, the drive throws F0012 and shuts down to protect itself.

This fault is specific to the inverter temperature monitoring circuit. It differs from motor overtemperature or DC link faults, which have their own separate codes in the Micromaster fault table. The drive cannot safely operate without knowing the inverter temperature, so it halts until you fix the sensor path.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Confirm the fault pattern. Note whether F0012 occurs every time you power up the drive or only under certain load or temperature conditions. A permanent fault at startup points to a hard wiring or board failure.
  2. Inspect all sensor wiring and connectors. Visually check the inverter temperature sensor harness for broken conductors, pinched insulation, or loose terminations. Reseat all relevant plugs on the control and I/O boards firmly.
  3. Isolate the drive electronics. Disconnect external control wiring and any removable I/O modules, then power the drive. If F0012 still appears with no external connections, the fault is internal to the drive hardware.
  4. Check the drive hardware. If the fault persists after wiring checks, examine the control board and inverter module for visible damage, corrosion, or loose internal connections. Consult your model’s service documentation for board layout.
  5. Replace the failed component. If you find a broken sensor wire or harness, repair or replace that assembly. If the fault is internal and the sensor path is integrated into the drive board, replace the control or inverter module per Siemens guidance.
  6. Reset the fault and test. After repair, cycle power or use the drive’s fault-reset function to clear F0012. Run the drive under normal load and verify stable operation with no fault return.
  7. Monitor temperature readings. If your drive supports parameter readouts, check the inverter temperature value to confirm the sensor is now reporting valid data within normal range.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Inverter heatsink temperature sensorAmazon | If your Micromaster has a separate serviceable sensor assembly, replace the sensor or its wiring harness when you find an open circuit.
Drive control board or I/O moduleAmazon | For integrated sensor circuits or persistent internal faults, replace the affected electronics module per your drive model’s parts list.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified drive technician or authorized Siemens service partner if the fault remains after you have verified all accessible wiring and connections. Internal board-level faults require safe disassembly, proper ESD handling, and familiarity with high-voltage DC bus circuits inside the drive. If your facility lacks experience with VFD internal repair or if the drive is under warranty, professional service will diagnose board-level failures and source correct Siemens replacement modules faster than field trial-and-error.
