Notifier Fire Alarm Fault Codes — Quick Reference
Notifier panels (NFS2-3030, NFS2-640, AFP-400, AFP-200, ONYX) display system trouble conditions with device point addresses, module identifiers, and fault descriptions on the LCD or LED display.
| Trouble Condition | Meaning | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ground Fault | Circuit has ground connection | Isolate circuit with systematic testing |
| Open Loop | SLC loop wiring break | Trace loop wiring, check device bases |
| Short Loop | SLC loop wiring shorted | Locate and repair shorted cable |
| Device Missing | Addressable device not responding | Verify address, reseat device, check wiring |
| Module Trouble | I/O or NAC module fault | Check module seating and power |
| Battery Trouble | Battery below threshold or failed | Test battery, replace if needed |
| AC Loss | Primary power failed | Check supply circuit breaker |
| Waterflow Alarm | Sprinkler waterflow switch activated | Confirm false alarm vs real flow |
Reading Notifier Trouble Conditions
Notifier panels identify faults by address. When a trouble occurs:
- Acknowledge — press the ACKNOWLEDGE key to silence the sounder
- Note the address — the panel shows the loop number and device address (e.g., L1 D023 = Loop 1, Device 23)
- Use the device map — reference the as-built drawings to find the physical location of the device
- Investigate the device — inspect detector base, module wiring, or field device
- Clear the fault — restore the device or wiring
- Reset the panel — press RESET and confirm system returns to NORMAL
Most Common Faults
Device Missing / Device Lost
The SLC (Signaling Line Circuit) can no longer communicate with the device at the listed address. This is usually caused by: the detector being removed from its base, a wiring fault on the loop near that device, or a failed device. Walk to the device location, inspect the base, and confirm the detector is seated.
Ground Fault
Notifier panels monitor for ground faults on both the positive and negative conductors. Use the ground fault isolator (if the loop is SLC loop with GFI modules) to identify which segment is faulted. Otherwise, systematically disconnect segments of the circuit at junction boxes.
Module Trouble
Notifier uses plug-in modules (NAC, relay, control-by-event). A module trouble indicates the module is not communicating with the panel CPU. Reseat the module. Check module address switches match the panel configuration.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Battery (12V 7Ah or 12V 18Ah) | Amazon | Replace if below 80% capacity |
| Smoke detector head | Amazon | Replace FAPT/FSP heads periodically |
| End-of-line device (EOLR) | Amazon | Required on all NAC circuits |
| SLC loop card | Amazon | Replace on persistent loop faults |
Jump to Fix
- Device missing → Walk to device location → Reseat detector → Check wiring
- Ground fault → Systematic circuit isolation → Repair insulation damage
- AC loss → Check building power → Check panel breaker → Confirm HVAC/lighting on
When to Call a Pro
Notifier-authorized service technicians handle programming changes, loop additions, and system certification. Fire alarm work requires licensure in most states.
