Mazak Alarm 500 is a PC Alarm — an error generated by the machine’s internal PC (programmable controller / PLC) logic rather than the CNC motion system. On Mazak MAZATROL controls (Matrix, Smooth), Alarm 500-series faults indicate that the machine’s internal ladder logic detected a fault condition: a door interlock not satisfied, a system not in the correct state, a subprogram completion signal missing, or a similar PLC-level condition.
Common Causes
- Safety interlock not satisfied — A door, guard, or safety switch isn’t in the correct state for the operation being commanded. The most common cause of PC alarms.
- Hydraulic or pneumatic system not ready — Mazak machining centers require hydraulic clamping pressure and air pressure within spec. A pressure drop generates PC alarms.
- ATC or pallet changer not in home position — If the tool changer or pallet system isn’t in its home/ready state, PC alarms prevent spindle start.
- Coolant or chip conveyor fault — Some Mazak models generate PC alarms when coolant level is low or chip conveyor faults.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Read the full alarm message — Mazak controls usually display a sub-message with the specific PC alarm condition. Note the exact text — it identifies which interlock or system is faulted.
- Check all doors and guards — Ensure all machine doors, guards, and safety panels are fully closed and their switches are functioning. A door that doesn’t fully latch generates PC alarms.
- Check hydraulic and air pressure — Verify hydraulic pressure gauge is within spec (typically 40–55 bar) and air supply pressure is at least 0.5 MPa (5 bar). Low pressure prevents clamping and generates PC alarms.
- Home the ATC and axes — Cycle power and re-execute the reference return (ZRN) cycle to confirm all axes and the ATC are at home position before attempting any program run.
- Clear the alarm and retry — Press [ALARM RESET] after addressing the root condition. If the same alarm immediately returns, the underlying hardware or switch hasn’t been corrected.
