LG Portable Air Conditioner Error Codes — Troubleshooting Guide
Your LG portable AC stopped cooling and shows an error code on the display. Do not panic. Most LG portable AC error codes are easy to diagnose and fix at home without calling a technician.

Step-by-Step Fixes
Fix 1: Empty the Water Tank (FL / Full / E4 Codes)
Portable ACs pull moisture from the air. Most LG models have a self-evaporative system that uses the hot condenser air to evaporate collected water. In humid conditions, the water tank fills faster than the system can evaporate.
Step 1: Turn off and unplug the unit.
Step 2: Locate the drain plug on the back or bottom of the unit. It is a rubber cap or threaded plastic plug.
Step 3: Place a shallow pan under the drain. Remove the plug and let the water drain out. A full tank holds about 1 to 2 quarts.
Step 4: For continuous operation in humid weather, attach a garden hose adapter or drain hose to the plug so water drains into a floor drain or bucket.
Step 5: If the FL code stays on after draining, the float switch may be stuck. Remove the drain plug and gently push a pipe cleaner or zip tie into the drain hole to dislodge any debris that might hold the float in the up position.
Fix 2: Clean the Air Filter (CL Code)
The CL code means the control board detected the evaporator coil is getting too cold and turned on freeze protection. A dirty air filter is the most common cause.
Step 1: Unplug the unit. Pull the air filter out from the front or top grille. Most LG portable AC filters slide out without tools.
Step 2: Hold the filter under running tap water. Run water from the inside of the filter outward so dirt washes off the dirty side.
Step 3: If the filter has not been cleaned in months and the grime is baked on, spray it with mild dish soap and scrub gently with a soft brush.
Step 4: Let the filter dry completely. A wet filter restricts airflow and grows mold.
Step 5: Reinstall the filter. Plug the unit back in. Turn it on. The CL code should clear within 10 minutes as the coil warms up and starts cooling again.
Fix 3: Check the Exhaust Hose (also helps CL Codes)
A kinked or crushed exhaust hose traps hot air inside the unit. This makes the condenser work harder and can trigger freeze protection.
- Inspect the entire exhaust hose from the back of the unit to the window kit
- Straighten any kinks
- Make sure the hose is fully extended — do not use an extension hose unless the manufacturer says it is okay (longer hoses reduce efficiency and can cause codes)
- Verify the window kit is sealed properly. Hot air leaking back into the room makes the AC run longer and harder
Fix 4: Test and Replace Sensors (CH01, CH02, CH05)
All LG portable AC sensor errors follow the same test procedure.
Step 1: Unplug the unit. Remove the back or top cover (depending on model). Look for small bead sensors with two wires.
CH01 Room Sensor: Usually on a bracket near the air intake.
CH02 Evap Sensor: Clipped into the evaporator coil fins (the cold coil at the front of the unit).
CH05 Condenser Sensor: Clipped into the condenser coil fins (the hot coil at the back).
Step 2: Disconnect the sensor from the control board. Set your multimeter to resistance mode.
Step 3: At room temperature (77°F / 25°C), the sensor should read approximately 10,000 ohms (10kΩ). If it reads open circuit (OL), short circuit (0), or is far outside range, replace it.
Step 4: Cut the old sensor wires a few inches from the connector. Connect the new sensor with butt splice connectors. Place the new sensor bead in the same position as the old one.
Fix 5: Check the Drain Port (water leak or FL code that keeps coming back)
Sometimes the drain port gets blocked by debris, dust, or algae growth. This triggers false FL codes or causes the unit to leak water on the floor.
- Inspect the drain port opening for visible blockage
- Use a pipe cleaner or small brush to clean it out
- Flush with a small amount of white vinegar to dissolve algae
- If the drain port has a rubber gasket, check it is seated properly

Preventing Future Errors
- Clean the air filter every 2 weeks during heavy use
- Check the drain port monthly during humid weather
- Keep the exhaust hose path as short and straight as possible
- Vacuum the condenser coil (accessible through the rear grille) once per season
- Store the unit upright in winter so residual water does not freeze and crack the drain pan
