⚡ Quick Answer

E204 means blower motor communication fault. Most often fixed by repairing damaged wiring harness or replacing the blower motor.

Lennox E204 Error Code — What It Means

The E204 code on a Lennox furnace indicates a blower motor communication or motor module fault. This means the furnace control board is not receiving proper feedback or operation signals from the indoor blower motor assembly. The fault is isolated to the blower motor circuit, not the gas train or ignition system.

In field practice, this code points to a problem in the motor itself, the wiring harness connecting the motor to the control boards, or the motor drive board that commands the blower. The furnace will typically not operate until the communication link is restored.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Power off the furnace at the service switch and breaker, wait 30 seconds, then restore power to attempt a reset and see if E204 clears.
  2. Confirm the E204 code on the control board LED display or diagnostic screen and verify that the blower is not running or responding.
  3. Inspect the blower motor harness for loose connections, corroded pins, physical damage, or moisture at both the motor plug and the control board connections.
  4. Disconnect the motor harness at the motor and use an ohmmeter to test winding resistance between each pair of motor leads (example readings from one technician case were 7.0–7.1 Ω between pairs).
  5. Check each motor winding to ground with the meter set to continuity or low resistance, you should see no continuity (open circuit) to the motor frame or earth ground.
  6. Replace the motor harness if you find damaged insulation, broken wires, or corroded terminals that cannot be cleaned.
  7. Replace the blower motor if resistance readings are far out of range, if any winding shows continuity to ground, or if the motor does not spin freely by hand.
  8. Replace the motor drive board or furnace control board if the motor and harness pass all tests but the E204 persists, consult a technician to verify which board is at fault.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Blower motor wiring harnessAmazon | Order the harness specific to your Lennox furnace model number, found on the unit data plate.
Blower motor assemblyAmazon | Match the motor model and horsepower to your furnace, verify voltage and rotation direction before installation.
Motor drive board or control boardAmazon | Identify the correct board by part number on the existing board, not all Lennox furnaces use the same control.

When to Call a Pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician if you are not comfortable working with line voltage or if you lack a multimeter and the skills to interpret resistance and continuity tests safely. A technician can quickly isolate whether the fault is in the wiring, motor, or control boards and has access to OEM parts and diagnostic software. If the furnace has had repeated E204 codes or other fault codes, a full system inspection is recommended to prevent further failures.
