What it means: The Decision-Maker controller detected battery voltage below 11.5 volts. The battery does not have enough stored energy to reliably crank the engine. This code triggers during the controller’s self-check before a start attempt.

Standby generators face a unique battery problem. The battery sits idle for days or weeks between exercise cycles. The controller draws a small amount of power continuously to maintain settings and monitor the system. Over time, this parasitic draw drains the battery if the onboard charger cannot keep up.

A battery at 12.6-12.8 volts is fully charged. At 12.4 volts, it is at 75 percent charge. At 12.0 volts, it is at 50 percent charge. Below 11.5 volts, the battery is deeply discharged and may have suffered permanent plate damage.

1. Measure battery voltage at rest.

Set your multimeter to DC volts. Place the red lead on the positive terminal and the black lead on the negative terminal. Read the voltage with the generator off and no loads active.

2. Test battery voltage under load.

This test reveals a battery that shows good resting voltage but cannot deliver current. Press the MANUAL START button and watch the voltage reading on your multimeter while the engine cranks.

A healthy battery holds voltage above 10 volts during cranking. If voltage drops below 10 volts, the battery has high internal resistance and needs replacement.

3. Check battery connections.

Remove both battery cables. Clean the terminals and the cable ends with a wire brush. Look for white or green corrosion between the cable lug and the terminal post. Replace any cable with cracked insulation or corroded copper strands.

Torque the terminal bolts properly. Loose connections cause voltage drops that fool the controller into thinking the battery is low.

4. Test the battery charger output.

Locate the battery charger board inside the generator control panel. On Kohler models, the charger is typically a small circuit board with a fuse and two output wires connected to the battery terminals.

With the generator off and the battery connected, measure DC voltage at the battery terminals. The charger should output 13.2-13.8 volts when it is active. If the reading is below 13 volts, the charger is not producing proper float voltage.

Check the fuse on the charger board. A blown 5-amp or 10-amp blade fuse means the charger cannot supply current. Replace the fuse and retest. If the new fuse blows immediately, there is a short in the charger output wiring or a failed charger board.

5. Measure parasitic draw.

Set your multimeter to DC amps. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Connect the multimeter leads between the negative battery post and the disconnected negative cable. This places the meter in series with the battery circuit.

With the generator off and in standby mode, read the current draw. It should be less than 50 milliamps. A draw of 100 milliamps or more will drain a standard 50-amp-hour battery to 50 percent in about 10 days.

If you find a high parasitic draw, start pulling fuses one at a time while watching the ammeter. When the draw drops, you have found the circuit with the fault.

6. Verify the weekly exercise cycle.

Check the controller settings for the exercise schedule. Kohler recommends a 20-minute exercise cycle once per week. The generator should run under load during exercise, at least 50 percent of rated capacity. Running under load charges the battery faster than running at no load.

If the exercise schedule was disabled or the generator was unable to run due to a fault, the battery may have been draining for weeks without recharge.

7. Test the starter motor current.

A failing starter draws excessive current during cranking. Use a DC clamp meter around the positive battery cable while cranking. Compare the reading to the starter specifications for your generator model. A current draw higher than spec indicates a failing starter or binding engine.
