Need this fixed instead of diagnosed?

KitchenAid dishwasher error codes explained with fixes. Covers 1-1 through 9-1 codes, flash code translation, and how to enter diagnostic mode.

KitchenAid dishwashers share the Whirlpool/Maytag platform and display errors as function-error pairs (like 6-1 or 7-1) on digital display models. Older models without digital displays use blink sequences. This guide covers both.

How to clear KitchenAid error codes: Press Cancel/Drain to cancel the cycle. If the error returns on restart, the underlying fault needs fixing.

How to enter diagnostic mode: Close the door. Select any 3 buttons in the sequence 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 within 6 seconds (must use the same three buttons each time). The machine will enter a test cycle sequence.

6-1 — Fill Timeout (Most Common)

The dishwasher didn’t fill with water within the time limit.

Fix:

  1. Confirm the shutoff valve under the sink is fully open.
  2. Check the supply hose for kinks.
  3. Clean the inlet valve screen — unscrew the supply hose at the valve, remove the small mesh screen, rinse it.
  4. Test the inlet valve solenoid with a multimeter (500–1500 ohms = good).

7-1 — Heating Element Fault

Water isn’t heating. Dishes come out wet and cold.

Fix:

  1. Test the heating element (the circular element at the bottom of the tub) for continuity. No continuity = failed element.
  2. Also test the high-limit thermostat and thermal fuse.

8-1 — Drain Timeout

Machine took too long to drain.

Fix:

  1. Clean the filter at the bottom of the tub (remove lower rack, unscrew cylindrical filter counterclockwise, lift out flat filter below it, rinse and scrub both).
  2. Check drain hose for kinks.
  3. Run Cancel/Drain cycle after cleaning to test.

8-2 — Drain Pump Fault

The drain pump specifically has a problem.

Fix:

  1. Clean the filter (as above).
  2. Check the pump impeller area for glass or debris that’s jamming it.
  3. If clear but still no drainage, the pump motor has failed.

9-1 — Diverter Motor Fault

The diverter motor controls which spray arm receives water — upper rack, lower rack, or both. When it fails, you may get poor washing on one rack level.

Fix: Test the diverter motor for continuity and proper operation. A failed diverter motor needs replacement.

Flash Codes (Older KitchenAid Without Digital Display)

On models with control boards but no digital display, errors show as blinking light sequences. Count the blinks, pause, count again:

When to Call a Technician

The diagnostic mode test cycle will run through all components and identify failures. If you’re not comfortable diagnosing from the error code alone, an appliance technician can run diagnostics and confirm which component needs replacement.
