Hoshizaki KM Series E1 Error Code — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Hoshizaki KM Series E1 means, why it happens, and how to fix it step by step.

Hoshizaki KM Series E1 Error Code — What It Means

The E1 error on Hoshizaki KM Series modular ice machines (KM-320, KM-515, KM-1301 and similar) indicates an ice making cycle fault — the machine was unable to complete a freeze or harvest cycle within the allowed time window. Hoshizaki’s control board monitors cycle duration; if the ice bridge doesn’t form or the harvest cycle doesn’t complete within spec, E1 is logged and the machine stops.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Clean the condenser — Remove the front panel and clean the condenser fins with a fin brush and compressed air. A clogged condenser on a KM unit in a warm kitchen is the single most common E1 cause.
  2. Run a cleaning cycle — Use Hoshizaki’s Scale Away cleaner to descale the evaporator and water distribution system. Follow the machine’s cleaning procedure in the manual.
  3. Check water temperature and pressure — Verify incoming water is below 90°F and at 20–80 PSI. High water temperature alone can cause E1 in summer months.
  4. Check refrigerant pressures — With a service manifold, compare suction and discharge pressures to the KM model’s pressure-temperature chart. Low suction during freeze = low refrigerant charge.
  5. Reset the machine — Press the power switch off, wait 30 seconds, and restart. If E1 was caused by a one-time environmental condition (high ambient heat, maintenance gap), it may not return after cleaning.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Hoshizaki Scale Away cleanerAmazon | Descale quarterly or per local water hardness
Water distribution tubeAmazon | Replace if nozzles are clogged or cracked
Refrigerant (R-404A / R-448A)Amazon | Only after finding and repairing the leak

When to Call a Pro

Refrigerant work on Hoshizaki KM units requires EPA 608 certification and recovery equipment. If condenser and water system are clean and E1 persists, a certified refrigeration tech should check the sealed system.
