Haas Alarm 117 — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Haas Alarm 117 means, why it happens, and how to fix it step by step.

Haas Alarm 117 — What It Means

Haas Alarm 117 indicates a spindle drive communication fault — the CNC control lost communication with the spindle drive amplifier. Haas uses a serial communication link between the control and the spindle drive; if this link is interrupted or the drive stops responding, Alarm 117 is generated and all motion is stopped.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Check spindle drive status LEDs — Open the control cabinet and look at the spindle drive amplifier LEDs. Any fault codes or error indicators on the drive itself narrow the diagnosis.
  2. Check spindle drive fuses and breaker — Verify the spindle drive input fuses (typically in the main cabinet) are intact and the spindle circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.
  3. Inspect the communication cable — Trace the serial cable from the spindle drive to the control board. Look for pinch points, heat damage near the spindle motor, and secure connectors at both ends.
  4. Reseat all communication connectors — Power down, unplug and firmly reseat all connectors on the communication cable at both the drive end and control board end.
  5. Power cycle completely — Turn off the main disconnect, wait 30 seconds for capacitors to discharge, then power back up. Check if Alarm 117 clears.

When to Call a Pro

If the spindle drive has failed internally, replacement requires Haas parameter cloning and spindle calibration. Contact Haas service or a certified Haas distributor for spindle drive replacement.
