Garland, Cleveland Range, and Market Forge are three major brands in commercial kitchen equipment. They share ownership under Welbilt and now part of Ali Group. But their equipment and error codes are different enough that each needs its own guide.

Garland is best known for heavy-duty restaurant ranges and ovens. Most use mechanical controls, not digital displays. That means no error codes in the traditional sense. You diagnose by symptom.

Cleveland Range makes commercial steamers and kettles. Their Tilterator and SteamCraft series use digital controls with actual error codes: E1 through E4.

Market Forge makes steam kettles, convection ovens, and shelving. Their cooking equipment is mostly mechanical with a few digital exceptions in the Elite series.

This guide covers all three brands with the specific failure modes you will encounter on each.

Cleveland Range Steamer Error Codes

Cleveland steamers use a straightforward error code system. The digital display shows an E code when the steamer detects a fault condition.

E1: Low Water Condition

The steamer needs water to make steam. When the controller detects low water, it stops the heating cycle and shows E1.

Start at the water supply. Is the shutoff valve open? Is there water pressure to the building? Commercial kitchens often share water lines with dishwashers and ice machines. A heavy draw on the line can drop pressure below what the steamer needs.

Check the inlet strainer. This screen catches debris from the water line. A clogged strainer restricts flow. Clean it with a brush and check it during routine maintenance.

The float switch sits in the steam generator or reservoir. It tells the controller when water is at the correct level. A stuck float switch can produce a false low-water reading. Remove the switch and check for free movement. Scale buildup is the most common cause of a stuck float.

The fill valve is an electrically operated solenoid valve. When the controller calls for water, the valve opens. If the valve does not open, check for voltage at the solenoid. No voltage points to a controller or wiring problem. Voltage with no water flow points to a bad valve or a clogged valve inlet.

E2: High Temperature or Overpressure

Steamers operate at a controlled pressure, usually between 4 and 10 PSI for atmospheric models. The pressure switch monitors this pressure and cycles the heat to maintain it.

E2 means the controller detected excessive temperature or pressure. The pressure switch may have failed in the closed position. This tells the controller the pressure is normal when it is actually climbing. The hi-limit safety eventually catches the overpressure condition and triggers the error.

Test the pressure switch with a multimeter. It should open when pressure reaches the setpoint. If it reads closed or open all the time regardless of pressure, replace it.

Check the steam pressure relief valve. This is a safety device that vents steam if pressure gets too high. A stuck relief valve can cause pressure loss but also signals a wider pressure control problem.

Scale buildup inside the steam generator creates hotspots and false temperature readings. If the steamer is overdue for a delime, E2 codes will keep appearing until the scale is removed.

E3: Steam Generator Failure

The steam generator creates the heat that turns water into steam. E3 means the generator has failed or cannot produce heat.

On electric models, check the heating elements with a multimeter. A failed element reads open. Elements fail from thermal stress, scale buildup, or age. Replace the element and delime the generator at the same time.

On gas models, check the burner, ignitor, and flame sensor. The sequence is the same as gas ignition on any commercial cooking equipment. Power to the gas valve, spark at the ignitor, flame sensed by the flame sensor. Failure at any step produces an E3.

The hi-limit thermostat on the steam generator can trip from overheating. This resets manually on most models. Locate the red reset button on the generator housing. If it has tripped, press it and run a test cycle.

Scale buildup is the most common root cause of all steam generator failures. Hard water deposits insulate the elements, trap heat, and cause the hi-limit to trip. A regular deliming schedule prevents most E3 errors.

E4: Drain or Valve Fault

The steamer drains water at the end of each cooking cycle. The drain solenoid opens, water flows out, and the controller monitors the process.

E4 means the drain system is not working correctly. The drain solenoid may be stuck closed or open. If stuck closed, water does not drain from the compartment. If stuck open, the steamer cannot hold water to make steam.

Check the drain solenoid for power. If the solenoid has voltage but does not open or close, replace it.

The valve position switch tells the controller whether the drain is open or closed. A failed switch produces an E4 even if the drain solenoid is working. Test the switch for continuity in both positions.

On timed systems, the drain cycle has a maximum time limit. If the drain sensor detects that draining is taking too long, the controller shows E4. This can happen with a slow drain from a partially clogged line or a solenoid that only opens partially.

Garland Range and Oven Troubleshooting

Garland ranges use mechanical thermostats and gas valves. There are no digital error codes. You diagnose by identifying what is not working and understanding why.

Common Garland Failure Symptoms

Oven not heating. This is the most common service call on Garland ranges. Start with the pilot. If the standing pilot is out, relight it. The pilot should be a steady blue flame. A weak or yellow pilot cannot reliably light the main burner.

If the pilot is on but the main burner does not light, check the gas valve solenoid. The thermostat sends power to the solenoid when it calls for heat. Listen for a click from the solenoid. No click means the thermostat, the wiring, or the solenoid itself is at fault.

Check the thermostat bulb. This is a sealed capillary tube filled with gas. The bulb sits inside the oven. Heat expands the gas in the tube, which opens or closes the thermostat contacts. If the capillary tube is kinked, pinched, or broken, the thermostat cannot regulate temperature. Replace the thermostat if the tube is damaged.

Check the thermocouple. This safety device sits near the pilot flame. If the pilot goes out, the thermocouple sends a signal to close the gas valve. A failing thermocouple can falsely signal a pilot outage. If the pilot stays lit but the gas valve closes anyway, replace the thermocouple.

Oven temperature is wrong. If the oven heats but the temperature does not match the dial setting, the thermostat needs calibration. Most Garland ovens have a calibration screw on the thermostat. Turn it to adjust. A deviation of more than 25 degrees Fahrenheit means recalibration is needed.

Convection oven fan runs but the oven does not heat. The fan motor is on a separate circuit from the gas burner. If the fan runs but there is no heat, the problem is in the heating system, not the fan motor.

Check the hi-limit thermostat. Convection ovens have a hi-limit safety that shuts off the burner if the oven gets too hot. A tripped hi-limit stops all heat. Locate the reset button and try resetting it.

Check the gas valve solenoid. The convection oven uses the same type of solenoid as the standard oven. Listen for the click when the thermostat calls for heat.

Check the ignition module. Garland convection ovens use direct spark ignition or hot surface ignition. If the module does not send spark, the burner does not light. Test the module by watching for a visible spark during startup.

Pilot cross-lighting problems. On ranges with multiple burners, the pilot flame cross-lights from one burner to the next. If burners do not light in sequence, the pilot flame may be too small or the burner ports may be misaligned.

Adjust the pilot flame using the pilot adjustment screw. The flame should be strong enough to cross-light all burners but not so large that it creates yellow tips. Also check burner alignment. Each burner must sit flush against its orifice and the pilot must point directly at the burner port.

Market Forge Equipment

Market Forge equipment is mostly mechanical with a few digital exceptions.

Steam kettles. Kettle problems fall into two categories: tilt mechanism issues and heating issues. The tilt mechanism uses a hand wheel or a power tilt motor. If the kettle will not tilt, check the gear box on hand tilt models or the motor and limit switches on power tilt models.

Heating problems on electric kettles come from failed elements or tripped hi-limits. On gas kettles, check the gas valve and burner assembly. The thermostat on Market Forge kettles uses a capillary tube. Damage to the tube means replacing the thermostat assembly.

Convection ovens. The door interlock switch prevents the oven from heating with the door open. A failed interlock switch stops all heat. Test the switch for continuity with the door closed. Replace it if it reads open.

The hi-limit thermostat trips from high internal temperature. This is common on convection ovens with clogged cooling fans or blocked vents. Reset the hi-limit and address the airflow problem so it does not trip again.

The mechanical timer may fail to keep the oven running. A stuck or broken timer prevents the heating cycle. Replace the timer if it will not advance or hold.

Elite series. The Elite series is Market Forge’s line with digital controls. These may show error codes on the display. Common codes include low water, high temperature, and sensor failure. The specific codes vary by model. Check the Elite series manual for your specific configuration.

When to Call a Professional

Call a qualified technician for these situations.

You see E2 codes on a Cleveland steamer after checking the pressure switch. Overpressure can cause a steam explosion if the relief valve fails. Do not bypass the pressure safety circuits.

A Garland oven thermostat capillary tube is damaged. This is the sealed tube that runs from the thermostat to the oven. Repair requires replacing the entire thermostat. Pinching or bending the replacement tube during installation ruins it. A technician with the right tools and experience is worth the cost.

You need to open a gas valve train. Gas valves, pressure regulators, and manifold connections inside a range need professional handling. These components control combustible fuel at line pressure.

The Cleveland steamer needs deliming but you have never done it before. The deliming process involves acid-based chemicals that can damage the steam generator if handled incorrectly. A technician can show you the right procedure.

You replaced a part and the error code returned. This means the original diagnosis was wrong or the new part was defective. A technician with diagnostic tools can identify the real problem faster than replacing parts at random.

You lack a service manual. Garland manuals differ by model and year. So do Market Forge and Cleveland manuals. Working without the correct wiring diagram can waste time and damage equipment. Order the manual or hire someone who has it.
