What Is a Rollout Switch

A rollout switch is a manual-reset safety device mounted near the burner manifold. It monitors for flames that escape from the burner tubes. Under normal operation, combustion stays inside the heat exchanger tubes. If flames “roll out” past the burner openings and into the burner compartment, the rollout switch detects the heat and opens its circuit. This kills power to the gas valve immediately.

Rollout switches have a higher temperature rating than high limit switches. They typically open at 220-250F. The higher threshold means they only trip when flames are physically present near the switch, not from normal heat exchanger temperature. This makes a rollout switch trip more serious than a limit switch trip.

Rollout Switch vs High Limit Switch

Both switches protect the furnace but they guard different things. The high limit switch monitors heat exchanger air temperature and is usually auto-reset. The rollout switch monitors the burner area for flame escape and is always manual-reset.

How to Locate Rollout Switches

Rollout switches are small rectangular devices about 1 inch by 1.5 inches. They have a raised button in the center for manual reset. You can find them by looking at the burner manifold area.

Carrier/Bryant: One or two rollout switches mounted on the burner bracket near the gas manifold. Look for a small device with two spade terminals and a red or white button.

Trane/American Standard: Single rollout switch mounted above the burner manifold on the left side. Some models use a rollout switch integrated into the burner assembly.

Lennox: Rollout switches on the burner manifold ends. Lennox Elite series may use thermal fuse-type rollout devices that require replacement instead of reset.

Goodman/Amana: Two rollout switches, one on each end of the burner manifold. Both operate independently. If one trips, the furnace shuts down.

Rheem/Ruud: Rollout switch near the bottom of the burner compartment. Rheem code 4 flash (or numeric codes 34/71) indicates a rollout or auxiliary limit circuit open.

York: Rollout switches on the burner manifold or near the flame sensor bracket. York uses snap-disc rollout switches with manual reset buttons.

Manual Reset Procedure

Locate the rollout switch. It has a small button in the center, typically red, white, or black. Press the button firmly with your thumb or a screwdriver handle. You will feel a click when the switch resets. The switch should now show continuity across its terminals.

If the button does not click, the switch may be still hot or the switch may be permanently open (failed). Wait 15 minutes for the furnace to cool and try again. If it still does not click, replace the switch.

After resetting, start the furnace and watch the burner area through the sight glass or burner access panel for the first 3-5 minutes of operation. If you see any flame coming out of the burner tubes, turn the furnace off immediately.

Top Causes of Flame Rollout

Blocked heat exchanger. The number one cause of flame rollout. When the heat exchanger passages become blocked (soot, debris, a bird nest, or a collapsed section), combustion gases have nowhere to go. They exit through the burner openings instead of flowing through the heat exchanger. This is the most dangerous rollout cause because it means the heat exchanger is compromised.

Cracked heat exchanger. A crack in the heat exchanger disrupts the draft through the burner tubes. Combustion gases take the path of least resistance, which may be back through the burner openings. A cracked heat exchanger also leaks carbon monoxide into the home’s airstream.

Blocked vent terminal. Snow, ice, leaves, or animal nests blocking the flue outlet cause combustion gases to back up. The gases cannot escape through the flue, so they push out through the burner openings. Check the exterior flue termination before diagnosing anything inside the furnace.

Incorrect gas pressure. A gas valve delivering too high of a manifold pressure burns more gas than the heat exchanger can handle. The flames grow larger than the burner tubes and roll out. This requires a manometer to diagnose and adjust. Only a licensed technician should adjust gas pressure.

Blocked or dirty burner tubes. Spiders, dust, or lint can partially block burner tubes. The blockage disrupts the flame pattern and causes localized rollout at the blocked burner section.

Undersized or restricted flue. If the flue pipe has too many elbows, is the wrong diameter, or has collapsed, combustion gases cannot vent properly. The resulting backpressure pushes flames out of the burners.

Heat Exchanger Inspection for Rollout

A rollout switch that trips repeatedly is the furnace telling you the heat exchanger may be damaged. You need to inspect the heat exchanger before running the furnace again.

Visual inspection method: Remove the burner assembly and the inducer motor. Use a bright flashlight and inspection mirror to look inside each heat exchanger tube. Look for cracks, holes, or soot buildup. Any crack visible to the naked eye means the heat exchanger must be replaced.

CO test method: A combustion analyzer inserted into the heat exchanger can detect carbon monoxide levels above 100 PPM, which indicates a crack. This requires specialized equipment.

If the heat exchanger is cracked, the furnace must be replaced. Modern heat exchanger replacement costs approach the cost of a new furnace.

Lennox Code 414 Specifics

Lennox furnaces display code 414 when the rollout switch opens. The 4 in the hundreds place indicates the fault group (safety circuit) and 14 indicates the specific fault (rollout switch open). On Lennox Elite and Merit series, code 414 requires manual reset at the rollout switch body. The switch is typically on the burner bracket. Press the reset button until it clicks. If code 414 returns, diagnose the rollout causes above before resetting again.

When to Call a Professional Immediately

Call a technician in these situations. Do not run the furnace.

A rollout switch that trips once and stays reset after a thorough inspection may have been caused by a temporary condition (wind blowing across the flue, a momentary gas pressure fluctuation). A rollout switch that trips twice in the same heating season is a pattern that requires professional diagnosis. Do not keep resetting it without finding the cause.
