Frigidaire Dryer E64 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E64 means a heating element circuit fault. Most often caused by a failed heating element or blown thermal fuse. Check and replace.

Frigidaire Dryer E64 Error Code — What It Means

The E64 error code on a Frigidaire dryer indicates a fault in the heating element circuit. The dryer has detected a problem with the heater assembly, which can include a broken heating coil, shorted element, defective wiring, or a tripped safety component like the thermal fuse or cycling thermostat. When this code appears, the dryer typically will not heat or may stop mid-cycle.

The control board monitors the heating circuit continuously. When it detects an open circuit, short, or abnormal resistance in the heater system, it throws E64 and halts operation to prevent damage or unsafe conditions. The code points you directly to the rear heater compartment and the components that manage heat generation and safety.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or wall plug and verify the dryer is completely off before you begin any work.
  2. Remove the rear access panel (or lower front panel on some models) to expose the heating element housing and wiring harness.
  3. Inspect all wiring and connectors at the heating element for burn marks, corrosion, or loose terminals, and repair or replace any damaged wiring.
  4. Test the heating element for continuity using a multimeter set to ohms. Disconnect the element wires, then measure across the element terminals. A good element typically reads about 20 to 50 ohms. If you see infinite resistance (open) or near-zero (short), replace the element.
  5. Check the thermal fuse for continuity by disconnecting it and testing across its terminals. It should show continuity (close to 0 ohms). No continuity means the fuse is blown and must be replaced.
  6. Test the cycling thermostat for continuity at room temperature (it should be closed, showing continuity). If it shows no continuity or erratic readings, replace it.
  7. Reassemble and test the dryer after replacing any failed parts. Clear the error code by unplugging the dryer for one minute, then run a heat cycle. If E64 returns and all heater components test good, the main control board is likely at fault and should be replaced.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Heating element assemblyAmazon | Order by your dryer’s model number. The element is the coil that generates heat.
Thermal fuseAmazon | One-time safety fuse, usually mounted on the blower housing or heater can. Replace if blown.
Cycling thermostatAmazon | Regulates heat on and off. Often located on the heater can or blower. Match the temperature rating to your model.
Main control boardAmazon | Only needed if all heating parts test good and the code persists. Verify your model number before ordering.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are not comfortable working with electrical components or using a multimeter, or if you have replaced the heating element, thermal fuse, and cycling thermostat and the E64 code still appears. A technician can perform advanced diagnostics on the control board and wiring harness, and has access to manufacturer service mode tests that pinpoint intermittent faults. If your dryer is still under warranty, contact Frigidaire or an authorized service center before opening the cabinet, as DIY repairs may void coverage.
