Quick answer

Frigidaire dishwasher error i30 (also displayed as “30” or “iE30” on some models) means the anti-flood float switch at the bottom of the base pan has detected water and tripped — the control board pauses the cycle and runs the drain pump until the leak clears. About 35% of i30 codes turn out to be detergent dispenser leaks or door gasket failures, not sump or pump leaks. Pull the dishwasher and inspect the base pan for visible water before condemning the pump.

What i30 means on a Frigidaire dishwasher

Frigidaire dishwashers (FDPC, FFCD, FGCD, FFBD series and the newer Gallery FGID line) include a UL-mandated anti-flood float in the base pan. The float is a small foam-filled plastic disk that rises with water level; when it lifts to about 1 inch above the pan floor, it actuates a microswitch wired in the safety chain to the main control board.

When the microswitch closes, the board immediately: (1) cancels the active wash cycle, (2) energizes the drain pump continuously, (3) displays “i30” or “30” on the front panel, and (4) refuses to start any new cycle until the float drops back down and the user power-cycles the dishwasher.

The i30 fault is intentionally aggressive — the float trips at about 1 cup of water, well below any structural flood threshold, because the design goal is to catch leaks early before they reach the floor or cabinet. Most i30 events involve less than a quart of accumulated water and are easy to dry out and clear.

Common causes (ranked by frequency)

In Frigidaire dishwasher service experience:

  1. Detergent dispenser gasket failure or door cracked — about 22%. Liquid detergent leaks behind the inner door panel down into the base.
  2. Sump-to-tub gasket leak — about 18%. The large rubber gasket between the sump pump assembly and the tub bottom has hardened and lets water seep through.
  3. Door gasket leak (small) — about 15%. Aged gasket along the bottom of the tub door.
  4. Drain hose loose at sump or disposer connection — about 12%. Hose clamp loose or hose perished.
  5. Inlet valve dribbling — about 10%. Valve doesn’t fully shut off; small drips accumulate.
  6. Cracked sump pump housing — about 8%. Less common but unrepairable; needs sump assembly replacement.
  7. False trigger from corroded float switch — about 8%. Float stuck up or switch contacts corroded.
  8. Cracked tub at a thinning point — about 5%. Old units with stress cracks.
  9. Heating element gasket — about 2%. Element seal failed.

Pro nugget: Frigidaire dishwashers (and their Electrolux-built siblings) have a documented detergent dispenser failure pattern — the dispenser door’s plastic latch hinge fatigues over 4-6 years, develops a hairline crack, and lets prewash detergent leak out the back of the dispenser onto the inner door panel, then down the door track into the base pan. The leak only happens during the brief moment the dispenser is energized to open (about 10 seconds per cycle), so it’s intermittent and hard to catch in the act. Telltale sign: white detergent crust on the inner door panel below the dispenser. Replace the dispenser assembly (part 154754502) — partial repairs on the hinge don’t last.

Step-by-step fix

Before you start: disconnect power at the breaker, shut off the supply at the wall valve under the sink.

  1. Confirm the code. Display reads “i30,” “30,” or “iE30” depending on model year. The drain pump will run continuously until you cut power.

  2. Pull the kick panel. Remove the lower kick panel (2 screws at corners). Shine a flashlight on the base pan. Look for: standing water, wet insulation, chalky white residue (dried detergent), rust on metal components.

  3. Identify the source. Note where the water is pooled. Pooled at the front center suggests door gasket or detergent dispenser. Pooled at the rear suggests inlet valve or supply hose connection. Pooled directly under the sump suggests sump or pump.

  4. Inspect the detergent dispenser from inside. Open the door, look at the back of the inner door panel below the dispenser. White or chalky residue means dispenser leaking. Remove the inner door panel (typically 10-15 screws around the perimeter) and inspect the back of the dispenser. Crack in the dispenser body or perished gasket means replace.

  5. Inspect the door gasket. Run a finger along the tub gasket all the way around. Feel for: tears, missing chunks, hardened sections that don’t compress, deformation. Replace if damaged.

  6. Inspect the sump-to-tub gasket. Remove the lower spray arm and filter. Look at the seam where the sump pump housing meets the bottom of the tub. A weep stain or active drip means the large sump gasket has failed.

  7. Test the float switch. Remove the float from the base pan (typically a snap-out plastic disk). Press the microswitch with a finger — should click. Ohm-test the switch terminals — should be closed when float is up, open when float is down. Corroded contacts that don’t return to open with float down means a false-trigger; replace the switch.

  8. Dry the base pan. Towel out all water. Use a hair dryer on low heat to evaporate moisture from corners. Leave the kick panel off for 12-24 hours if the leak was significant.

  9. Reassemble and test. Restore power and water. Start a Rinse Only cycle. Watch the base pan from below for active leaks. If dry after 30 minutes of testing, run a full cycle. Watch i30 for recurrence over the next week.

FAQs

My base pan is dry but i30 still shows. Why? The float switch is stuck up or has corroded contacts. Remove the float, test the switch, and replace if it doesn’t return to open with no water present.

Can I disconnect the float switch to clear i30? No. The float switch is in the UL-required safety chain. Disconnecting it leaves the dishwasher without anti-flood protection — illegal in most jurisdictions and a flood risk.

My dishwasher is 4 years old and showing i30. Common at that age? The 4-6 year mark is when detergent dispenser hinges typically start cracking on Frigidaire units. Check the dispenser first.

Will using powder detergent instead of liquid prevent dispenser leaks? Marginally — powder is less likely to leak through small cracks. But the cracks themselves are a structural failure that gets worse over time; eventually even powder leaks. Replace the dispenser when it cracks.

Difference between i30 and 5C error? i30 = water in base pan (flood detection). 5C = sensor or board communication fault. Different paths.
