Festo Fault Codes - Quick Reference
Festo pneumatic systems include valve terminals (MPA, CPV, VTSA), servo drives (CMMT, CMMS), and CPX I/O modules. Fault codes appear on the module LED, Festo Maintenance Tool, or via fieldbus diagnostics.
| Code / LED | Meaning | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Red steady LED | Module fault | Check power supply and module config |
| Red flashing | Valve driver overcurrent or short | Check valve coil wiring |
| Yellow flashing | Warning, operation continues | Check diagnostic register |
| E10x (CMMT) | Drive overcurrent | Check motor wiring and load |
| E20x (CMMT) | Drive overvoltage | Check DC bus voltage |
| E30x (CMMT) | Encoder fault | Check encoder wiring |
| E40x (CMMT) | Communication timeout | Check fieldbus connection |
| CPX-F-CPU: E01 | CPU initialization fault | Power cycle, check firmware |
| CPX: SF LED | System fault | Read diagnostic data via fieldbus |
| Valve short circuit | Output short | Check valve connector wiring |
Most Common Faults
Valve Coil Short Circuit
CPX and MPA valve terminals monitor individual valve driver outputs. A short-circuited valve coil triggers an overcurrent flag and disables that output. Test the valve coil resistance - a good 24VDC valve coil is typically 30–80 ohms. Open or shorted coils need valve replacement.
CMMT Servo Drive Faults
Festo CMMT-AS servo drives provide detailed error codes via the Festo Automation Suite or status LEDs. E1xx errors are generally motor/drive power issues; E3xx are feedback/encoder issues. Check motor cable shielding - Festo drives are sensitive to EMI from unshielded or long motor cables.
CPX Communication Faults
CPX I/O modules on PROFIBUS, EtherNet/IP, or EtherCAT can lose communication when address switches are set incorrectly or when the fieldbus cable is damaged. Verify DIP switch addresses match the controller configuration exactly.
Pressure Supply Issues
Most Festo valve terminal faults that appear as electrical are actually pneumatic - the valve tries to actuate, the cylinder doesn’t move, and the PLC flags a position fault. Always confirm supply pressure (typically 4–8 bar) and check for silencer blockage on exhausts.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Valve coil (MFH/MEBH) | Amazon | Replace on short circuit |
| CPX module | Amazon | Replace on persistent CPU fault |
| Encoder cable (CMMT) | Amazon | Common EMI/damage point |
| Pressure regulator (LFR series) | Amazon | Replace when flow drops |
| Filter element | Amazon | Replace per maintenance schedule |
When to Call a Pro
Festo CMMT servo drive parameter issues and CPX configuration mismatches often require the Festo Automation Suite connected via USB or Ethernet. If fault logs don’t give a clear cause, Festo’s technical support line can pull logs remotely.
