EVAPCO Cooling Tower Fault Codes — Quick Reference
EVAPCO cooling towers and evaporative condensers with PMC (Packaged Mechanical Component) control panels or VFD systems generate fault conditions from motor protection, temperature monitoring, and water management systems.
| Fault | Meaning | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fan Motor Fault | Motor overload or trip | Check motor amps, bearings, and connections |
| High Leaving Water Temp | Leaving water above setpoint | Check fan operation and load balance |
| Low Basin Level | Makeup water not keeping up | Check makeup valve and inlet pressure |
| High Basin Level | Overflow condition | Check float valve and drain |
| Vibration Alarm | Excessive vibration detected | Inspect fan, shaft, and bearings |
| Freeze Alarm | Basin approaching freeze temp | Check heater and circulation |
| VFD Fault | Drive fault on fan motor | Refer to VFD fault code |
| Motor Phase Fault | Phase loss or imbalance | Check supply fuses and connections |
Most Common Faults
Fan Motor Fault
EVAPCO towers use axial or centrifugal fans. Motor overloads are caused by: ice buildup on fan blades in winter, worn motor bearings increasing load, blade pitch set incorrectly, and belt slippage on belt-drive models. Check motor amperage and compare to nameplate. Inspect bearings for roughness or excessive play.
High Leaving Water Temperature
If the tower is not maintaining approach temperature, check: fan speed (VFD may be in low-speed or manual mode), drift eliminators and distribution basins for scale buildup, and whether the heat load has increased beyond the tower’s rated capacity.
Freeze Alarm
Cold weather tower operation is critical. EVAPCO towers use basin heaters to prevent freeze-up. Check the heater element with an ohmmeter. Verify the freeze protection thermostat setpoint. EVAPCO recommends maintaining basin water temperature above 35°F.
EVAPCO Closed-Circuit Coolers (LSTE)
EVAPCO LSTE closed-circuit evaporative coolers add additional monitoring:
- Tube Bundle Fouling — external fouling reduces heat transfer; schedule cleaning
- Blowdown Fault — blowdown valve not responding; check valve and conductivity controller
- High Conductivity — water quality issue; increase blowdown rate
Maintenance Schedule
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Check basin level and water quality |
| Monthly | Inspect fan operation and motor amps |
| Annually | Clean tube bundle (LSTE), inspect fill, check basin sealant |
Jump to Fix
- Fan motor fault → Check amps → Inspect bearings → Check for ice or blade damage
- High leaving water temp → Verify fan speed → Check for scale → Evaluate load
- Freeze alarm → Check basin heater → Verify thermostat → Increase circulation
