Electrical Panel Trip and Reset Guide

⚡ Quick Answer

How to identify, diagnose, and reset tripped circuit breakers and electrical panel faults.

Electrical Panel Trip and Reset ΓÇö What You Need to Know

When a circuit breaker trips in a residential, commercial, or industrial panel, it’s protecting you from overcurrent, short circuit, or ground fault. Before resetting, you need to understand why it tripped ΓÇö otherwise it will trip again immediately.

Types of Circuit Breaker Trips

Trip TypeVisual IndicatorMost Common Cause
OverloadHandle moves to middle positionToo many devices on the circuit
Short circuitHandle moves to middle or OFFShorted wire, failed appliance
Ground fault (GFCI/AFCI)Test/reset button popped outMoisture, damaged cord
Thermal-magneticHandle to middleSustained overcurrent
Electronic (molded case)Fault indicator LEDProgrammable trip points

How to Reset a Tripped Breaker

Residential / Commercial Panel (Square D, Eaton, Siemens, GE)

  1. Find the tripped breaker ΓÇö It’s the one in the middle position (not fully ON or OFF)
  2. Turn it fully OFF first ΓÇö Push handle to OFF position (don’t skip this step)
  3. Identify and remove the overload ΓÇö Unplug devices on that circuit
  4. Wait 30 seconds ΓÇö Let the breaker cool
  5. Reset to ON ΓÇö Push handle firmly to ON
  6. If it trips again immediately ΓÇö There’s a short circuit; don’t keep resetting

Industrial Molded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)

  1. Press the RESET button or move handle to OFF then ON
  2. Check for mechanical trip indication (flag indicator if present)
  3. For motor branch circuit breakers, verify the motor and cable are not faulted before resetting

Ground Fault / AFCI Breakers

  1. Press the TEST button to confirm the breaker trips
  2. Press the RESET button firmly
  3. If it won’t reset, there is an active ground fault on the circuit ΓÇö locate and fix it

Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping

SymptomRoot CauseFix
Trips immediately on resetShort circuit in wiring or deviceFind and repair short
Trips after 5-10 minutesThermal overloadReduce load or upgrade circuit
Trips randomlyLoose connection, failing breakerTighten lugs, replace breaker

When to Call a Pro

Breakers that won’t stay reset, panels with visible burn marks, and breakers in arc flash hazard zones require a licensed electrician. Never work inside a live panel without proper training and PPE.
