Daikin U3 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Daikin U3 means check operation not executed or transmission error. Learn causes, wiring checks, test-run steps, and when to call a pro.

Daikin U3 Error Code — What It Means

U3 on a Daikin system indicates that the required check or test operation has not been completed, or that a transmission fault has occurred during the startup sequence. Daikin’s service diagnostic sheets list U3 as ‘check operation not executed’ and ‘transmission error.’ This code appears most often on VRV, SkyAir, and commercial systems after installation, a PCB replacement, or a power cycle when the controller is waiting for a formal commissioning test run before normal operation can begin.

The fault is partly procedural and partly electrical. If the system recently had service work or a board swap, the technician must run the built-in check operation from the controller or service menu. If wiring is incorrect or communication noise is present on the line between indoor and outdoor units, U3 will also trigger. Until the test sequence completes successfully and communication is verified, the system will not run.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Verify the model family and recent service history. Check whether your system is a VRV, SkyAir, or commercial unit that requires a formal check operation, and ask if any PCBs were replaced or power was cycled recently.
  2. Inspect all communication wiring between indoor and outdoor units. Compare each wire landing to the wiring diagram on the unit or in the installation manual and correct any miswired, loose, or missing connections.
  3. Look for sources of electrical noise. Route communication wiring away from high-voltage lines, VFD cables, and motors, and verify that both indoor and outdoor units share a clean common ground.
  4. Access the service menu or controller and run the required check operation or test run. Consult your model’s installation or service manual for the exact button sequence or menu path to initiate the startup verification.
  5. Observe the display during the test. The system should cycle through self-checks and communicate with all connected units. If U3 clears and the system runs normally, the test was successful.
  6. If U3 persists after a successful test run, power down the system, re-check DIP switch settings and PCB configuration per the service manual, then repeat the check operation.
  7. Replace the outdoor unit PCB if wiring is correct, the test operation completes without clearing the fault, and all other communication checks pass. After board replacement, repeat all setup and test steps before returning the system to service.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Outdoor unit main PCBAmazon | Order by model and serial number. Confirm DIP settings and addressing after installation.
Communication wiring harnessAmazon | Use shielded twisted-pair cable if specified by your model’s installation guide.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified Daikin technician if you are not familiar with the service menu or test-operation procedure for your model, if you have already checked wiring and the fault will not clear, or if the system is under warranty or contract. Commercial VRV and SkyAir systems often require factory training to navigate commissioning steps, DIP switch tables, and addressing. If you replaced a PCB yourself and U3 remains after running the check operation, a tech can verify board configuration and communication integrity with diagnostic tools. Any scenario involving refrigerant work, multiple faults, or uncertain wiring should be handled by a licensed professional.
