Daikin L5 Error Code — What It Means

The L5 error code on a Daikin mini split signals an output overcurrent fault on the DC side of the inverter. The protection circuit has detected a sudden current surge reaching or exceeding 32.3 A during compressor startup or operation, compared to a normal operating current of less than 15 A. This instantaneous overcurrent condition indicates a short circuit in one of three areas: the inverter board’s IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) or DM (Diode Module), the compressor coil itself, or a fault in the motor internal short detection circuit on the inverter PCB.

This code is a shutdown fault. The unit will not operate until the underlying short is found and repaired. It always points to a hardware failure rather than a setting or sensor glitch, so troubleshooting requires electrical testing by a qualified technician.

Technicians sometimes replace the inverter PCB first without isolating the fault. Always disconnect the compressor and test phase resistance (U-V, V-W, W-U) before ordering a board. Is your outdoor unit more than 7 years old?
Yes: Compressor end-of-life failure is much more likely. Expect a compressor replacement or possibly a full outdoor unit swap depending on refrigerant type and labor cost.
No: A younger unit suggests inverter board failure or wiring damage rather than compressor wear. The technician should isolate the board first.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off power at the breaker and wait 10 minutes for the inverter capacitor to fully discharge before any inspection or testing.
  2. Inspect all wiring at the outdoor unit terminal block, looking for loose connections, corrosion, burned terminals, or damaged insulation on the U, V, and W compressor leads.
  3. Disconnect the compressor wiring at the terminal (U, V, W) and use a multimeter in resistance mode to measure phase-to-phase resistance (U-V, V-W, W-U).
  4. Compare resistance values. Normal readings are balanced (typically 0.5 Ω to 2.0 Ω depending on tonnage) and within 5% of each other. Near 0 Ω or unbalanced readings confirm a shorted compressor coil.
  5. Test the inverter PCB in isolation by using the service-mode transistor check function (if available) or measuring output voltages between phases with the compressor disconnected. Readings within 5% tolerance indicate the board is functional.
  6. Replace the faulty component. If the compressor tests shorted, replace the compressor. If the inverter board shows a short with the compressor disconnected, replace the inverter PCB.
  7. Reconnect all wiring and restore power. Run the system and monitor for stable operation without the L5 code returning.
