Crown Forklift Error Codes
Crown forklifts (RC series stand-up, SC series sit-down, SP series order pickers, and FC series counterbalanced) use the Access 1 2 3 display system. Codes are numeric and grouped by subsystem.
Crown Traction System Codes (1-10)

Most Common Crown Forklift Faults
Code 31 — Traction Encoder Fault
The most common Crown fault. The traction motor encoder sends speed feedback to the controller. When the signal drops, the controller limits speed to creep mode (typically 2-3 mph). The encoder wiring harness runs from the motor to the controller and is often damaged by abrasion against the motor housing. Check the harness for chafed wires at the motor connector first — I find a damaged harness about 60% of the time. Crown encoder harnesses run $80-150 depending on model.
Code 7 — High Battery Discharge
Crown electrics are designed to protect the battery. Code 7 activates when voltage drops below the discharge threshold. On lead-acid batteries, this usually means the battery needs charging. On trucks with reduced runtime, check the battery water level — low water causes premature voltage drop. On lithium-ion equipped Crown trucks, the BMS monitors individual cell voltage. If one cell group has failed, the entire pack needs evaluation.
Code 5 — Brake Not Released
Crown uses spring-applied, electro-magnetically released parking brakes. If the brake doesn’t release, the truck won’t move. The brake solenoid coil fails occasionally — test resistance at the brake connector (should read 10-30 ohms). Also check the brake actuator linkage for mechanical binding from debris buildup. This fault is more common on Crown RC series trucks operating in dirty environments like lumber yards and foundries.
