Carrier Error Code 16 - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Carrier error code 16 signals a communication fault between indoor and outdoor control boards. Learn the common causes and step-by-step repair.

Carrier Error Code 16 — What It Means

Error code 16 on Carrier systems is a communication malfunction between the indoor adapter or user interface board and the outdoor main control board. The system cannot see valid data exchange across the control wiring or through one of the control boards, so the indoor unit cannot detect the outdoor unit properly.

This fault appears on Carrier communicating platforms including Infinity and related Bryant and Payne models. It does not indicate a refrigerant or airflow problem. The breakdown is in the low-voltage control signaling path between the two boards.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Power cycle the entire system by switching off the breaker and turning off the furnace or air-handler switch, then wait at least five minutes before restoring power and retesting the code.
  2. Inspect all communication wiring and connectors at both the indoor and outdoor units, looking for loose terminal screws, unseated plug housings, frayed insulation, or pinched wire runs.
  3. Verify the connector pinout and orientation on the ABCD-style or Phoenix-style communicating plug, making sure each wire lands on the correct labeled terminal and the plug is not reversed.
  4. Isolate the wiring path by temporarily connecting the user interface or a service tool directly at the outdoor unit using the proper 24 V power source to see if communication succeeds when the indoor-to-outdoor cable is bypassed.
  5. Replace the indoor adapter or communicating interface board if wiring checks good but the fault remains, since the indoor board is the most common electronic failure point for code 16.
  6. Replace the outdoor main PCB if a new indoor adapter board does not clear the fault and wiring integrity is confirmed.
  7. Clear the fault code and run a full cycle once the repair is complete, monitoring the display to confirm code 16 does not return.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Communicating adapter board / indoor interface PCBAmazon | Match the exact board part number printed on your current assembly or consult your model’s service manual.
Outdoor main control boardAmazon | Verify model compatibility by outdoor-unit serial number before ordering.
Low-voltage communication wire harnessAmazon | Use the same gauge and conductor count as the original factory harness if replacement is needed.

When to Call a Pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician if you are not comfortable working with low-voltage control wiring, if you do not own a multimeter or Carrier service tool to test communication signals, or if replacing the indoor adapter board does not resolve code 16. Communicating Carrier systems require correct board pairing and sometimes software configuration that only a trained technician with manufacturer access can perform. If your unit is under warranty, professional diagnosis and documentation are usually required to avoid voiding coverage on expensive control boards.
