Bosch Washer E02 Error Code — Drain Problem Fix

An E02 on your Bosch washer means the drain cycle failed — water is sitting in the drum that shouldn’t be there. This is one of the most common Bosch washer errors, and it’s also one of the most fixable. The culprit is almost always a physical blockage you can clear in 15–20 minutes.

Your Bosch washer drains through a pump system: water exits the drum through a pump filter, then through the drain pump, then out via the drain hose to your home’s drain system. Block any point in this path and the machine logs E02.

Note: on some Bosch models, drain errors may appear as F21 or d instead of E02 — the diagnosis and fixes are identical.

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1 — Safety Preparation

1. Press Cancel to stop the current cycle.
2. Unplug the washer from the wall.
3. If the drum is full of water, it will spill when you open the filter — lay old towels and position a shallow pan at the front of the machine.

Step 2 — Clean the Drain Pump Filter

This resolves E02 in 70–80% of cases.

1. Locate the service flap at the lower front of the washer (there may be a coin-slot pry point).
2. Open the flap — you’ll see a small rubber emergency drain hose and the pump filter cap.
3. Pull out the emergency drain hose and uncap it into your shallow pan. Drain as much water as possible.
4. Slowly unscrew the pump filter cap counterclockwise — expect more water to flow out.
5. Remove the filter and clean everything: remove lint, hair, coins, buttons, or any debris.
6. Reach inside the filter housing with a finger and feel for anything lodged in the pump impeller — spin the impeller by hand to confirm it moves freely.
7. Rinse the filter under the faucet, reinstall, and tighten the cap firmly.

Step 3 — Check the Drain Hose

1. Pull the washer away from the wall.
2. Trace the drain hose from the machine to the standpipe or utility sink connection.
3. Check for kinks — a kinked hose at the back of the machine is a common cause.
4. Confirm the hose isn’t inserted too deeply into the standpipe (no more than 6 inches deep).
5. Correct hose height: end of hose should be 24–48 inches above the floor.

Step 4 — Check the Standpipe or Sink Drain

Pour water slowly into your standpipe or sink and observe the drain speed. If your home drain is clogged, the washer’s drain water has nowhere to go and backs up — the machine sees this as a drain failure.

Clear slow home drains with a drain snake or plunger before running the washer again.

Step 5 — Test the Drain Pump

If the filter is clean, hose is clear, and home drain is fine, the drain pump motor may have failed.

Signs of a dead pump:

• No sound during drain phase (the pump normally makes an audible whirring sound)
• Pump hums but water doesn’t move (the impeller is jammed)

1. Unplug the machine.
2. Access the pump (either from the front filter area or through the machine’s rear panel, depending on model).
3. Test the pump motor with a multimeter for continuity. No continuity = failed pump.
4. Replace the drain pump assembly.

1. Plug the washer back in.
