Allen Bradley PowerFlex 40 F2 Fault — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Allen Bradley PowerFlex 40 F2 ground fault means, why it trips, and how to diagnose and fix it step by step.

Allen Bradley PowerFlex 40 F2 Fault — What It Means

The Allen Bradley PowerFlex 40 F2 fault is a Ground Fault — the drive has detected that an abnormal amount of current is flowing from one or more output phases to the equipment ground. The PowerFlex 40’s ground fault detection monitors the vector sum of U, V, and W output currents; any unbalanced return (current going to ground instead of completing the motor circuit) triggers F2. Ground faults are a wiring and motor insulation issue, not a drive parameter issue — F2 almost always points to a physical problem in the motor cable or motor winding.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Disconnect the motor from the drive output — Power off, lock out/tag out. Remove motor leads from T1, T2, T3 at the drive. This isolates whether the fault is in the motor/cable or the drive itself.
  2. Megohm test the motor — Use a 500V or 1000V megohm tester on each motor phase to ground (phase U to ground, V to ground, W to ground). Below 1 MΩ = insulation failure. Replace or rewind the motor.
  3. Inspect the motor cable — Visually inspect the entire cable run for damaged insulation — look where cable enters conduit fittings, passes through panels, or runs near heat sources. Replace the cable if any damage is found.
  4. Check for moisture — Open the motor terminal box and look for condensation or water. Dry thoroughly and apply motor terminal box sealant if the environment is wet.
  5. Reset and test with motor disconnected — Power on the drive with motor leads still disconnected. If F2 trips immediately with no output connected, the drive’s output insulation monitoring circuit or IGBTs may have been damaged.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Motor replacementAmazon | When megohm test shows failed insulation
VFD-rated output cableAmazon | Replace if cable insulation is damaged; use shielded cable for long runs
Motor terminal box sealantAmazon | Use in wet locations to prevent moisture intrusion

When to Call a Pro

If F2 fires with the motor disconnected (no load on the drive), the drive’s IGBT module may have failed with an internal ground path. This requires internal drive inspection by an AB-authorized service center.
